In defense of progressive taxation

One of Andrew Sullivan's readers emailed him an argument in support of progressive taxation.

It reminded me of something I first said in college: namely, that the reason higher taxes for the rich are justified is that those with money are best equipped to participate in the country's economic and financial system and thus make more money.

Since a significant portion of tax revenues are spent maintaining an environment where the free market can thrive, it's only fair that those who benefit most from that system provide more in return to support it.

Check out Sullivan's reader's email here.
