All of this nonsense about voter registration fraud

Matthew Yglesias has a smart post about all of the hoo-haw we're hearing about Acorn "stealing the election."

The fact is that we have a relatively confusing process to register voters, and with 200 million-plus potential voters in the U.S., any effort to register people is going to result in mistakes. And yes, even some cases of individuals turning in fake forms in order to earn some extra cash.

But that's largely a problem with our registration system. And given the numbers, people have to evaluate the error rate as a percentage of the total number of registrations.

More here.

THE SAME ARGUMENT, in fact, applies to our voting process. Given the numbers of people voting in a presidential election, there are inevitably going to be errors. Votes miscounted, votes lost, etc.

The problem is when we have a close election, like that of 2000, when the margin of error is greater than the margin of victory.
