A new technique for fighting HIV

RNA interference worked in mice... more work to be done to see if the technique will help humans.

RNA interference works by introducing fragments of RNA that bind to and inactivate the RNA that the HIV virus uses to replicate itself.

Here is a great animation from Nature that illustrates normal gene expression and RNA interference in general.

Similar work has previously been done with the hepatitis B virus.
